Describe the causes of hearing loss in newborns and identify risk factors for both congenital and delayed onset hearing loss.

Demonstrate knowledge of the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme, including its objectives and procedures.

The New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3) Newborn Hearing Screening Strand is for staff engaged in newborn hearing screening within healthcare services. Through on-job learning, it covers the use of screening equipment, understanding and managing hearing screening for babies, risk factors for hearing loss, referral processes, ethical behavior, and culturally safe practice. Learners gain a nationally recognised qualification valued across the sector.
