Demonstrate knowledge of the causes of hearing loss in babies, including congenital and delayed onset factors.

This Level 3 New Zealand Certificate programme is designed for Newborn Hearing Screeners, primarily employed by Te Whatu Ora and the Ministry of Health, who support the delivery of the National Hearing Screening Programme for babies. Trainees learn on the job, developing competencies in hearing loss causes, screening equipment use and maintenance, the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP), appropriate referral pathways, recognising vulnerability and abuse, and applying culturally safe work practices. The qualification enables screeners to contribute to early detection and intervention for babies with hearing loss.
