Describe the causes of hearing loss in newborns and identify risk factors for both congenital and delayed onset hearing loss.
Knowledge of NZ Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Programme
Demonstrate knowledge of the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme, including its objectives and procedures.
Operate and maintain screening equipment

- Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP)
- Use and maintenance of newborn hearing screening equipment
- Carrying out newborn hearing screening for the UNHSEIP
- Referral and habilitation processes within UNHSEIP
- Recognising and responding to vulnerability and abuse
- Demonstrating professional and ethical behaviour
- Culturally safe principles for Māori, Pasifika, and other cultures
- Community values and attitudes and their impact on people with disabilities
What you need to know first
Must be employed as a Newborn Hearing Screener by a District Health Board (Te Whatu Ora) or Ministry of Health
