Graduates are eligible for registration with Te Tatau o te Whare Kahu (Midwifery Council of New Zealand) upon successful completion.

Ability to work autonomously as a culturally competent, sustainable and reflective midwife, encompassing care for women/pregnant people and whānau.

Confident provision of care through clinical placements, simulations, and intensive practical experience, covering normal and complex pregnancy, birth, and postnatal situations.
The Bachelor of Midwifery at Otago Polytechnic develops graduates to be autonomous, culturally competent practitioners ready for registration with Te Tatau o te Whare Kahu (Midwifery Council). Students learn through a blend of online modules, face-to-face tutorials (hui ākonga), practical placements and compulsory block courses, with multiple campus and satellite site options across both the North and South Islands. The programme meets Midwifery Council competencies. Graduates are equipped to provide midwifery care that is responsive to the needs of whānau and communities, uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and operate sustainably within health systems. Completion leads to diverse roles as community and facility-based midwives, educators, researchers or advisers in midwifery.

University Entrance as defined by NZQA including: minimum 18 Level 3 credits in biology, chemistry or physics; 16 credits in an English-rich subject at Level 3; 16 credits at Level 3+ in two approved subjects.
20 credits at Level 2 including 16 credits in biology, and another 16 in chemistry or physics.
Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2+, 5 in reading and 5 in writing.
Numeracy: 10 credits at Level 1+ in specified standards.
OR successful completion of NZ Certificate in Study and Employment Pathways (Health Bridging Certificate Level 3 or 4), OR a recognised equivalent.
Testimony from at least two referees (academic and employment/professional/volunteer based).
Self-declaration of health and fitness to practice; may require a medical report.
Personal statement demonstrating communication skills and self-responsibility.
Current comprehensive First Aid Certificate (incl. CPR NQF unit standards 6401 & 6402 or equivalent).
Driver’s licence and access to reliable transport.
Police check, risk assessment and acceptance through a full Children's Act 2014 safety check.
Special admission for applicants over 20 may be available with evidence of academic equivalence.
