This programme is designed for learners seeking to gain foundational skills relevant to building, construction, and allied trades. It combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on projects, introducing health and safety, construction materials, use of power tools, interpreting plans, and working as part of a team. Students plan and complete building/construction projects under general supervision, gaining practical experience for a range of trade occupations.
Course Content
- Introduction to health and safety legislation and procedures
- Overview of roles in allied trades
- Timber and construction materials
- Use of power tools and construction machinery
- Project planning, drawings and sketching
- Safe working procedures in a BCATS environment
- Interpretation of construction plans and following instructions
- Teamwork and communication in projects
- Completion of two construction projects (including a group project)

Domestic learners aged 16 and over.
Completion of New Zealand Certificate in Building, Construction, and Allied Trades Skills (Level 1).
