The New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4) at NMIT is a comprehensive, employment-based apprenticeship programme for aspiring or experienced carpenters. It combines on-the-job training with block courses throughout the year, ensuring students learn to carry out construction tasks safely, effectively, and to industry standards. Graduates are prepared for a career as qualified carpenters, with skills applicable in residential, industrial, commercial, and multi-storey construction. The programme includes core areas such as workplace safety, construction communication, structural work, sub-structures, roof and frame construction, and interior and exterior finishing.

What you need to know first
Applicants under 20 years: At least 8 credits at NCEA Level 1 showing basic literacy; or equivalent, and at least 8 credits at NCEA Level 1 showing basic numeracy; or equivalent
Applicants 20 years and over: No minimum academic requirements
All applicants: Must have a likelihood of success demonstrated by interview
Must be an apprentice with a Te Pūkenga NMIT Training Agreement between themselves, NMIT and their employer, or be an experienced carpenter with at least seven years of building/construction industry experience evidenced by a portfolio and two referees
