Core skills this course teaches
Develop safe work practices
Learn and apply industry-standard safety procedures in construction and infrastructure environments, including specific practices for electrical, plumbing, and building activities.
Complete foundational trade tasks
Gain practical skills in core trade disciplines including building basic structures, elementary electrical work, and introductory plumbing/gasfitting components.
Use and maintain relevant trade tools
What You're Signing Up For
This programme introduces secondary school students to the construction and infrastructure industry, offering hands-on learning in building, electrical engineering, plumbing and gasfitting trades. Over one academic year, students gain practical skills, work on real projects, and achieve unit standards that count towards NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3, preparing them for further education or entry-level work in the construction sector.
Course Content
- Work safely with electrical equipment
- Isolate and test low-voltage electrical subcircuits
- Manual soldering and de-soldering for electrotechnology work
- Cut and join sheet metal for plumbing and gasfitting
- Safe work practices in the workplace
- Tools selection, usage and maintenance (plumbing/drainlaying)
- Safe working practices in a BCATS environment
- Mathematical processes for BCATS projects
- Constructing non-consent timber framed utility buildings

Must be a secondary school student enrolled in the Waikato Trades Academy
