Develop skills in creating 3D geometric assets representing organic and rigid-body forms such as creatures, characters, environments, and man-made objects.
The New Zealand Diploma in Animation (Level 5) at NMIT offers a comprehensive education in computer-generated animation techniques used in film, TV, gaming, and visual media. Students learn 3D modelling (soft and rigid body), rigging of models for animation, dynamic effects like fire and fluid simulation, CGI lighting and post-production, real-time shading, and technical tool development. The program fosters professional practice skills including business acumen and collaborative workflows. Students complete a substantial project tailored to their interests, gaining experience in a team environment. Upon completion, students earn 120 credits and a diploma qualification, with options to progress to Level 6 diploma or a Bachelor of CGI. Full-time and part-time study options are offered at the Nelson campus starting February 2026.

University Entrance: NCEA Level 3 (minimum 60 credits with 14 credits in three approved subjects at Level 3, plus literacy and numeracy requirements) OR relevant Level 4 qualification OR equivalent international qualification
