Explain the role of genetics in evolution and the genetic improvement of plants and animals.

Apply theoretical principles of classical, quantitative and molecular genetics to develop strategies for genetically improving plants, animals and microorganisms.

This course provides an introduction to the genetics of plants, animals and microbes with relevance to agricultural production systems. It covers the role of genetics in evolution, classical, quantitative and molecular genetic principles, and applications towards genetically improving plants, animals, and microorganisms. Ethical issues related to genetics and transgenics, especially with regard to indigenous knowledge and global relevance, are also discussed.
