This major prepares students for a career as a New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) - English interpreter. Students become familiar with the Deaf community and culture, develop proficiency in NZSL, and build interpreting skills for a variety of settings. The programme includes in-depth study on the history and ethics of interpreting, observation and participation placements, and practical experience interpreting in health, education, legal and other professional contexts. AUT is the only university in New Zealand offering qualification as an NZSL-English interpreter.
