What You're Signing Up For
The New Zealand Diploma in Creative Writing (Level 6) equips students to further their craft in genres of their choice, compose original work, critique and edit texts, and acquire business skills vital for success as a writer. The qualification is taught by specialist tutors, enables students to work on novels, scripts, collections or non-fiction, and covers writing for online publication, self-publishing, professional practices, and advanced editing. Delivery is mainly online with regional workshops for support.
Course Content
- Long Texts: Elements of long fiction and non-fiction; producing and revising a long-form manuscript.
- Short Fiction: Techniques for short stories and guided practice in short story writing.
- Short Nonfiction: Forms of nonfiction; practice in writing and editing nonfiction for target audiences.
- Online Writing: Preparing manuscripts for publication as ebooks; covers design, ISBN, editing, and proofreading.
- Publishing: Professional writing skills including taxes, ethics, time management, publishing methods, mentorships, competitions, agents, and funding.
- Editing: Manuscript editing and critiquing skills for peers; providing and receiving feedback.
- Becoming Professional: Independent writing/research project from proposal to finished first draft.
- Elective (choose one):
- Poetry: Poetry forms and composition practice.
- Short Scripts for Screen: Film structure, script formatting, visual storytelling, and scriptwriting.
