Read, understand, and respond to a variety of texts relevant to everyday and workplace English.

Write clear, connected texts with appropriate English language skills for familiar and predictable situations.
The New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3) (Applied) at UCOL is designed to help non-native speakers become confident in English for academic, community, and employment contexts. The programme combines in-person and online learning over 19 weeks and covers key English skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking, each at an applied Level 3 standard. Graduates can progress to further study or better engage with the academic community and workplace in New Zealand.
What you need to know first
New Zealand Certificate in English Language (General) (Level 3) or equivalent skills and knowledge such as IELTS 5.0, all components from a single test report. For learners in New Zealand, a diagnostic test may be used to determine starting level.

UCOL is a polytechnic built around the kind of learning that actually sticks — hands-on, practical, and grounded in the real world. With campuses across the lower North Island and a programme range that stretches from trades and health to creative arts and IT, it's a strong fit for learners who want a clear path into work without unnecessary detours. Whether you're fresh out of school, changing direction, or building on what you already know, UCOL is set up to meet you where you are.
