Demonstrate independence in reading and comprehending extended or complex texts (fiction and non-fiction) on familiar topics.

Produce well-structured, appropriate texts for a variety of purposes and audiences, with minimal linguistic errors.
Learn to communicate independently and effectively in a variety of familiar and some less familiar social, community, workplace, and academic English language contexts. This Level 4 qualification, comparable to CEFR B2, prepares students for further tertiary study or professional environments where advanced English proficiency is required. Delivered through a blended format, with both in-person classes and online components.
What you need to know first
New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3) or equivalent skills and knowledge (e.g. IELTS 5.5 from a single test report form)
For learners already in New Zealand, a diagnostic test may be used to determine appropriate level

UCOL is a polytechnic built around the kind of learning that actually sticks — hands-on, practical, and grounded in the real world. With campuses across the lower North Island and a programme range that stretches from trades and health to creative arts and IT, it's a strong fit for learners who want a clear path into work without unnecessary detours. Whether you're fresh out of school, changing direction, or building on what you already know, UCOL is set up to meet you where you are.
