Core skills this course teaches
Develop conversational te reo Māori
Gain confidence in speaking te reo Māori for everyday situations and personal introductions.
Understand and use Māori language structures
Learn vocabulary, correct pronunciation, sentence structure, tenses, and grammar for written and verbal communication.
Participate in Māori cultural practices
Engage with mōteatea, karakia, tikanga Māori, and use te reo Māori in a marae setting.
What You're Signing Up For
Māori Night Classes at Unitec offer an introduction and progressive learning pathway in te reo Māori, the language of Aotearoa's tangata whenua. Courses are delivered in a tikanga Māori environment and are designed for adult learners of all backgrounds, with four levels ranging from beginner to full immersion. Classes are taught at Mt Albert and Waitākere campuses and focus on language development, culture, and community connection.
Course Content
- Basic personal introductions, mihimihi
- Karakia (prayer), waiata (song)
- Basic language structures and vocabulary
- Correct pronunciation
- Punctuation, syntax, tenses
- Pepeha and whakapapa
- Conversation and sentence construction
- Oral practice and advanced discussion
- Cultural immersion and tikanga Māori
- Formal Māori settings, recitation of karakia, mōteatea (traditional songs)
What you need to know first
To enrol for free, must be a New Zealand citizen or resident (certified documentation required).
Toru and Whā levels are only taught at Mt Albert campus.
