Mechanical
A course by
Otago Polytechnic
A hands-on, pre-apprenticeship qualification providing foundational knowledge and practical skills in mechanical engineering, including machining, fabrication, welding, and health and safety—ideal for those seeking entry into engineering trades or apprenticeships.
In-person study
Face-to-face learning in a physical classroom setting
Dunedin, Dunedin
It will take a total of 1 year
This course requires 45 hours per week

Apply relevant legislation and safety procedures in routine mechanical engineering workshop operations.

Use numeracy, literacy, and drawing abilities for basic engineering tasks and problem-solving.

This one-year, full-time certificate equips students with skills in the design, manufacture, and maintenance of machinery, equipment, and tools. Through practical workshops and theoretical learning, students develop competencies in machining, fabrication, welding, and teamwork. The programme provides off-site industry work experience and fulfils the academic requirements of the first year of an industry apprenticeship, reducing future apprenticeship time.
