Operate independently under indirect supervision and lead participants in specific outdoor activities emphasising safety in low-technical yet dynamic environments.

Showcase technical skills, leadership experience, and the ability to manage and respond to risks and hazards in a range of low-risk outdoor settings.
This programme enables learners to operate independently as outdoor activity instructors at Level 4, preparing them to lead safe, effective sessions in specific outdoor activities such as bushwalking, mountain biking, high ropes, kayaking, rock climbing, abseiling, and EOTC. It provides a blend of online and in-person learning, academic and practical skills development, and rigorous assessment, aligning with NZOIA leader standards and ensuring graduates are ready for dynamic low-technical outdoor environments.
What you need to know first
40 credits at NCEA Level 2, including 10 literacy credits at NCEA Level 2 and 10 numeracy credits at NCEA Level 1; or recognised equivalent.

It will take a total of 18 weeks

Apply an organisation's safety management system to lead in accordance with activity regulations and best practice industry standards.
Or completed a relevant NZQF Level 2 qualification (tertiary study), or recognised equivalent.
Must be a New Zealand or Australian citizen or resident living in NZ.
Demonstrated personal leadership experience in the chosen strand via logbook/evidence submission.
Ability to attend the three-day skills training and 1-2 day assessment, participate in evening online tutorials, and access a group to practise leadership skills.
Discretionary entrance possible for applicants who do not meet the above but can demonstrate potential for success.
