Implement and review policies and systems to manage risk and safety for outdoor activity operations within organisational safety management frameworks.

The NZ Certificate in Senior Outdoor Leadership (Level 6) equips professionals in the outdoor recreation industry to lead, mentor, and educate developing instructors and guides, especially in high-hazard or technically complex environments. The programme extends instructional competence for those with significant outdoor instructing experience, supporting both organisational safety and advanced leadership development. Graduates will be capable of implementing and reviewing safety management systems, applying technical knowledge across dynamic outdoor environments, and educating others in specific technical competencies. The programme includes competency-based assessments and develops advanced skills through two key courses: Senior Outdoor Recreation Leadership and High Ropes Advanced Professional Practice.

Blended study
This is a mix of online learning & face-to-face sessions
9 Geddes Terrace, Avondale, Auckland
It will take a total of 18 weeks
Apply specialised technical knowledge and experience to manage the provision of outdoor recreation activities in high-hazard or technically complex settings.

Select and apply a range of pedagogical practices to educate developing leaders and instructors in specific outdoor activity technical competencies.
Extensive personal skills and leadership experience in outdoor instructing (logbook evidence required)
NZ permanent resident or citizen (or Australian citizen currently residing in New Zealand)
Group to practise leadership skills with during course
40 credits at NCEA Level 2 including 10 literacy credits and 10 numeracy credits at NCEA Level 1, or equivalent
Relevant course at NZQF Level 2 or equivalent (for post-school candidates)
Discretionary entry considered for applicants with evidence of capability
Ability to attend required in-person training and assessment events and participate in online evening tutorials
English language proficiency as described by provider
