Face-to-face learning in a physical classroom setting

It will take a total of 1 year

Develop the ability to safely and confidently lead others in various outdoor pursuits under supervision in low-risk environments.

Demonstrate knowledge and practical skills in safety management, equipment use, and responding to weather and local conditions.

Understand and implement leadership theories, group management, and effective communication in outdoor settings.
This Level 4 certificate prepares students to lead others confidently in outdoor pursuits under supervision in low-risk environments. The programme covers adventure leadership, performance and health, kaitiakitanga and environmental education, and practical skills in outdoor activities such as sea kayaking, rock climbing, bush walking, and mountain biking. Learning is hands-on, with a strong focus on sustainability, cultural respect, and safety management. Graduates will also attain the New Zealand Outdoor Instructors Association Bush Leader award.
What you need to know first
NCEA Level 1 (80 credits at Level 1, including 10 Literacy credits and 10 Numeracy credits) or equivalent qualification (e.g., International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination)
