In-person study
Face-to-face learning in a physical classroom setting

It will take a total of 19 weeks

Develop an understanding of tikanga Māori and apply key Māori cultural values and protocols in waka ama contexts.

Show practical paddling technique competency and apply safety procedures when using waka ama.

Describe the origins and history of waka ama, including traditional Pacific navigation practices.
This NZ Certificate is designed for people seeking to gain foundational knowledge in tikanga Māori within the speciality of waka ama (outrigger canoeing). The programme immerses participants in waka ama, covering traditional knowledge, paddling skills, fitness and wellbeing, and principles of Māori cultural practice. Participants will learn in a supportive environment, engaging with whānau, hapū, and community-oriented activities, while fostering healthy lifestyle habits.
What you need to know first
Completion of Te Pōkaitahi Reo Māori (Reo Rua) | NZ Certificate in Te Reo Māori (Level 2) or equivalent qualification.
Acceptable fluency in te reo Māori or English (as determined via interview for international students).
