Graduates are eligible to apply for provisional teacher certification with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Ability to teach specific subjects at secondary level, employing effective pedagogy and classroom management.
The Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary) at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington prepares students to become secondary school teachers in New Zealand. The programme covers key principles and theories of teaching and learning, effective classroom practice, and working with learners from diverse backgrounds. The course includes 16 weeks of teaching placement, and can be completed in 10 months (full time), 18 months, or two years (part-time). Graduates are eligible for provisional teacher certification and will be prepared for secondary teaching roles both in New Zealand and overseas.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in one or more teaching subjects (major to 300-level required; may have another subject to at least 200-level)
