Graduates will possess the theoretical and practical knowledge to practice competently as paramedics in a range of emergency settings.

Paramedicine is New Zealand’s most trusted profession, and the AUT Paramedicine major prepares students to make critical, complex decisions in diverse emergency situations. Students learn from practising professionals and complete approximately 1,000 hours of clinical placement in ambulance, hospital, mental health, and primary care environments. The programme develops both theoretical knowledge in healthcare science and practical skills necessary for the paramedic scope of practice. Graduates meet the requirements to apply for the Intermediate Life Support Paramedic scope, and are eligible for careers across Australasia, Canada, and the UK.

It will take a total of 3 years
Upon successful completion, students are eligible to apply for the Intermediate Life Support (ILS) Paramedic scope of practice.

Graduates can assess, diagnose, and manage patients across a spectrum of acute and chronic medical emergencies, including cardiac and trauma situations.
University Entrance or equivalent
Selection into the Paramedicine major is competitive with limited spaces
Applicants with ambulance, nursing or military medicine qualifications may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning
Full clean driver's licence
Good physical fitness
