Develop comprehensive knowledge of the pathology, pathophysiology, aetiology, and factors influencing wound healing and how debridement benefits patients.

Discuss and justify the use of different wound debridement approaches to promote optimal clinical outcomes.

This Certificate provides competency in conservative sharp wound debridement (CSWD) for registered health professionals performing wound care with adults. Study includes online learning, a two-day face-to-face practicum, and workplace learning under clinical mentorship. Content covers wound healing, debridement modalities, pain management, clinical assessment, and skills using Māori models of care. Entry requires relevant professional registration, workplace and mentor support, and focuses on practical mastery of wound debridement in the clinical context.

Evaluate and manage pain appropriately for patients undergoing wound debridement procedures.
Currently registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner with the Nursing Council of New Zealand
Accredited Enrolled Nurse with at least three years’ experience (Nursing Council of New Zealand)
Annual practising certificate from the Podiatrists Board of New Zealand
At least 18 years old
Disclose any criminal convictions
Consent to a police check prior to commencing
Access to a workplace with appropriate supervision, equipment, and caseload
Employer support letter confirming adequate workplace resources and willingness to support learning
Mentor must be a registered health professional, competent in CSWD, available for practical supervision
