About This Course
This is New Zealand’s first and only qualification in wound debridement. The programme provides competency in conservative sharp and sharp wound debridement (CSSWD), designed for existing health professionals including registered nurses, nurse practitioners, enrolled nurses (with experience), podiatrists, or doctors. It features a blend of online learning, practitioner mentorship, a two-day face-to-face practicum (in either Dunedin or Auckland), and a work-based learning component. The curriculum covers wound aetiology and pathophysiology, debridement modalities and techniques, pain management, and clinical assessment. Graduates will be equipped to undertake CSSWD procedures safely and effectively within their clinical practice.
Course Content
- Pathology, pathophysiology, and aetiology of wounds
- Barriers to healing and wound hygiene
- Wound infection and biofilm
- Wound debridement history and relevance
- Debridement modalities: options, indications, contraindications, referral criteria
- Scope of practice and multidisciplinary approaches
- Pain evaluation and management (including pharmacology)
- Lower limb and foot assessment (arterial/venous/diabetic considerations)
- Use of Māori models of care, e.g., Te Whare Tapa Whā
- 16-week online learning plus 2-day intensive practical workshop
- 30 hours work-based learning with mentor oversight
- Portfolio completion of five CSSWD clinical competencies
