Demonstrate understanding of the pathology, aetiology, and factors affecting wound healing in adults, and how and when wound debridement benefits patients.

Discuss, select, and justify safe wound debridement techniques, including recognition of indications, contraindications, and appropriate referral practices.
This is New Zealand’s first and only qualification in wound debridement. The programme provides competency in conservative sharp and sharp wound debridement (CSSWD), designed for existing health professionals including registered nurses, nurse practitioners, enrolled nurses (with experience), podiatrists, or doctors. It features a blend of online learning, practitioner mentorship, a two-day face-to-face practicum (in either Dunedin or Auckland), and a work-based learning component. The curriculum covers wound aetiology and pathophysiology, debridement modalities and techniques, pain management, and clinical assessment. Graduates will be equipped to undertake CSSWD procedures safely and effectively within their clinical practice.

This is a mix of online learning & face-to-face sessions
Online and face-to-face workshops (Dunedin or Auckland), Online; Dunedin; Auckland
It will take a total of 6 months
This course requires 9 hours per week

Evaluate pain and provide ongoing, appropriate pain management strategies for patients undergoing wound debridement, including an understanding of pharmacology.
Currently registered health professional (Doctor with Medical Council NZ, Registered Nurse, Enrolled Nurse with three years' experience, or Registered Podiatrist with annual practising certificate)
Employer organisational support and mentor arrangement to complete clinical competencies
At least 18 years of age
Disclose any criminal convictions prior to commencing the programme
Consent to a police check prior to commencing the programme
Access to a workplace with appropriate patient caseload, equipment, and supervision
