The Master of Architecture (Professional) at Otago Polytechnic is an advanced two-year programme for those holding an undergraduate architecture degree. It focuses on sustainable, heritage, and complex building design in Aotearoa New Zealand, blending research, studio, theory, and work experience. Students engage with industry, complete a major research project, and address 21st-century environmental challenges. The degree meets the academic requirements for registration as an architect in New Zealand (subject to external accreditation and experience), and graduates are prepared for a dynamic architectural career.
What you need to know first
Recognised undergraduate degree in architecture with a grade point average of 4.0 or higher for all level 7 courses
Or recognised undergraduate degree in architecture and significant portfolio of professional work

It will take a total of 2 years
This course requires 40 hours per week

Develop proficiency in place-based, heritage, and cultural design approaches including meta-narrative inclusion.
Or recognised postgraduate qualification in architecture
Or evidence of equivalent competencies and significant professional portfolio
Minimum age of 16 years at commencement (or early release exemption form)
English language: NCEA Level 2 English (4 credits in Reading, 4 in Writing) OR equivalent
If English not first language: IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) or equivalent

In-person study
