The Master of Science - Plant Breeding programme prepares students for careers as plant breeders in the cropping or pastoral industries, both in New Zealand and internationally. Designed to align with internationally-recognised qualifications, the programme covers advanced research in genetics, molecular biology, and field-based breeding. Students benefit from connections to local plant breeding companies and Crown Research Institutes, with opportunities for field tours and applied research. The qualification consists of 240 credits, split between taught courses and a thesis, with a thesis-only 120 credit route available to eligible students.
What you need to know first
For 240 credit option: Relevant New Zealand level 7 bachelor’s degree or recognised equivalent with a B average or better in 300-level and final-year courses.
For 120 credit (thesis-only) option: Relevant postgraduate honours degree with Second Class Honours, Division One equivalent or higher.
