What You're Signing Up For
The Video Production Training Scheme offered by NMIT, part of Te Pūkenga, is an online Level 5 course designed to equip students with practical skills in digital video composition, editing, camera operation, storytelling, and professional practices in video production. Students explore various video styles including documentaries, short films, music videos, and social media content. The course features a flexible, project-by-project structure allowing students to manage their own time and develop essential industry skills or confidence in their hobby. Entry requires NCEA Level 2 or equivalent, with alternative entry pathways for mature students. The course awards 20 credits and runs for 15 teaching weeks plus 2 weeks study break. Fees for 2025 are approximately NZD 328 plus a $43 Student Services Levy.

- Digital video composition and framing
- Creative idea generation through research and video/film history
- Video sequence creation exploring storytelling and narratives
- Video editing and post-production techniques (image stabilisation, subtitles, split screens)
- Use of video production tools and equipment
- Composition and lighting techniques
- Manual camera modes (shutter speed, aperture, ISO) and high-quality audio recording
- Professional practices including customer service, pricing, copyright and media release rights
- Researching trends and influencers for artistic guidance
- Video hosting platforms
- Screenwriting, special effects, and transitions
- Exploration of video styles: documentary, short films, promotional, music videos, social media platforms (YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram)
