About This Course
This pre-apprenticeship programme provides the foundation knowledge and practical skills required for those wishing to become electricians or work in non-registration areas of the electrical industry. With hands-on learning in modern workshops and industry-connected lecturers, the course prepares students for apprenticeships or roles in areas like electronic security, appliance servicing and automation. Successful graduates can progress to a Level 4 Electrical apprenticeship to become qualified electricians or pursue further study.
Course Content
- Electrical Workplace Practices: Health and safety, first aid certificate, professionalism in electrical contexts.
- DC Fundamentals: Theory and practice of Direct Current circuits and systems.
- AC Fundamentals: Magnetism, electromagnetism, and AC theory; tools and equipment use.
- Cables, Fittings and Testing: Installation, testing and diagnostics for electrical cables, fittings, legal requirements.
- Supply Systems: The NZ electricity supply system, high-voltage safety, user protection.
- Protection, Plans and Circuits: Power-switching circuit design, electrical drawings, lighting systems.
- Electrical Installations: Cable and wiring systems, including in damp environments.
- Electrical Machines, Transformers and Isolation: Theory and operation of transformers and machines, isolation procedures.
- Final Capstone Test: Comprehensive examination of electrical work theories and practices.
Entry Requirements
Minimum age 16 years at programme start (or completed Early Release Exemption Form).
