Safely maintain watch on a fishing vessel by monitoring navigation and operational conditions according to maritime regulations.

Plan and oversee catch handling, stowage, and discharge processes for fishing operations within coastal and offshore limits.
This 24-week programme prepares current deckhands or holders of the Maritime New Zealand Advanced Deckhand – Fishing licence to progress to supervisory roles on fishing vessels operating within coastal and offshore limits (up to 200 nautical miles off NZ). It covers safe watchkeeping, equipment operation, fishing operations management, and prepares students for the Maritime NZ Mate Fishing Vessel – Limited licence, incorporating both theoretical online/distance learning and an extensive in-person block course in Nelson.

Must hold the Maritime New Zealand Advanced Deckhand – Fishing licence, or complete a Training Record Book prior to the programme.

Applicants must meet MNZ sea time, medical, and eyesight requirements for the relevant licence.
Must be physically fit to participate in practical training.
Medical Certificate from a General Practitioner or Seafarers Medical Certificate.
For Level 4 programmes, IELTS academic score of at least 5.5 (with no band below 5.0), if English is not the first language.
