Face-to-face learning in a physical classroom setting

It will take a total of 18 months

Develop the required knowledge and skills to qualify for the MNZ Mate Fishing Vessel - Unlimited Certificate of Competency, permitting work as a Mate on fishing vessels over 24m in unlimited waters.

Complete all required STCW safety and rescue certificates, including first aid, fire fighting, personal survival, and security awareness.

This Level 6 qualification is designed for individuals with significant maritime experience who want to progress to Mate positions on fishing vessels of 24 meters or more in any operating area at sea. The programme covers all necessary maritime operations, navigation, safety, and technical competencies, and provides supplementary certificates required for the MNZ Mate Fishing Vessel – Unlimited Certificate of Competency. Graduates will be equipped for a wide range of sea-going roles and may continue toward Skipper certification.

Minimum 14 credits at NZQF Level 1 or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau
Minimum 8 credits at NZQF Level 2 or higher in English (4 reading, 4 writing)
Equivalent qualification (NZ or overseas) recognized by NZQA
Evidence of ability in mathematics and physics if lacking formal qualifications
New Zealand Offshore Watchkeeper or Master Certificate of Competency or equivalent
IELTS (academic) 6.0 overall, no band below 5.5, if first language is not English
Physically fit for practical components (medical certification required)
Meet MNZ sea time, medical and eyesight requirements for license
