Manage and maintain the safety and operations of fishing vessels under 45m and non-fishing vessels up to 500t within coastal and offshore NZ limits.

Demonstrate understanding of maritime legislation, compliance requirements, and vessel management best practice as a skipper.
The Maritime Operations – Skipper Fishing Vessel Limited programme prepares graduates to become skippers for fishing vessels less than 45m and non-fishing vessels up to 500t, operating up to 200 nautical miles from the NZ coast. The course includes essential STCW basic and advanced short courses, radio certificates, and covers vessel management, maritime legislation, navigation, and operational safety. It is composed of distance/online study and a 7-week block course in Nelson prior to the Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) final examination. This qualification contributes towards the MNZ licence requirements for Skipper Fishing Vessel Limited.
What you need to know first
MNZ Mate Fishing Vessel – Limited license or STCW Watchkeeper Deck 500t Near Coastal license; New Zealand Offshore Watchkeeper license (with extra courses in Ship Stability and Cargo/Fishing vessel operations)
