About This Course
This 12-week maritime course teaches you how to be an effective deck crew member, providing practical skills for safe crewing under supervision, sea safety, emergency response, and essential seamanship. Graduates will be equipped to work on commercial vessels in restricted or near coastal waters and can progress to advanced deck roles with further training and experience.

- Workplace health and safety requirements onboard a vessel
- Sea safety and survival equipment operations
- Maritime emergency procedures (including fire prevention and fire-fighting methods)
- Basic operational tasks as a crew member
- Provision of first aid on board
- Maritime terminology and nautical terms
- Parts, operational areas, fittings and equipment of vessels
- Chain of command
- Hand signals for berthing and letting go
- Safe handling and usage of lines and ropes
- Personal protective equipment for mooring
- Anchoring procedures
- Equipment and machinery usage
- Mooring, berthing, and letting go operations
- Collision Regulations
- Watch keeping and lookout duties
- Steering a vessel and basic seamanship skills
- Fibres and manufacture/care/storage of ropes
- Splicing and stopper use with fibre ropes
