Core skills this course teaches
Identify chainsaw cutting unit components
Students will be able to identify chainsaw chain components by name and function in accordance with accepted industry practices.
Sharpen a chainsaw chain safely
Students will learn to select an appropriate safe area and use recommended tools to sharpen and test a chainsaw chain.
Perform routine maintenance checks
Students will be able to conduct maintenance checks and perform corrective actions for faults according to manufacturer and industry standards.
What You're Signing Up For
Knowing how to use a chainsaw is quite different from knowing how to maintain one. This course will teach you the skills you need to look after your equipment, keeping it in top working condition and safe to use. From sharpening the chain to disassembling and reassembling the entire machine, this course covers theory and practical assessments, bringing students up to current standard practices suitable for the forestry industry. It is intended for those who wish to advance their knowledge in chainsaw maintenance and repair, not suitable for beginners.
Course Content
- Knowledge of chainsaw cutting unit parts and functions (drive links, depth gauges, sprocket sizes)
- Sharpening chainsaw chains safely using appropriate tools
- Maintenance requirements for chainsaw components including sprocket tip chainsaw bar
- Identifying and rectifying causes of cutting unit faults
- Running in a new chain as per manufacturer recommendations
- Consequences of using poorly maintained chains
- Conducting routine checks and maintenance in accordance with accepted industry practice
- Reassembling chainsaw to safe working condition following manufacturer's guidelines
- Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including high viz, safety glasses, chainsaw chaps, ear protection and helmet
