Apply knowledge of plant and soils science
Identify, select and grow plants using theoretical and practical understanding of plant and soils science.
Apply knowledge of growing systems and environments
Establish and grow plants by applying understanding of horticultural systems and optimal environments.
Demonstrate horticultural practical skills
Perform foundational horticultural techniques in propagation, plant care, soil management, pest and disease control, and amenity horticulture practices.
What You're Signing Up For
This Level 3 certificate provides foundational theoretical and practical knowledge in general horticulture, covering plant and soil science, growing environments, plant nursery production, soil management, plant protection, and amenity horticulture. Graduates will be able to work across a range of horticultural enterprises or progress into higher horticulture study.
Course Content
- Introduction to Botany and Plant Nursery Production: plant processes, sexual and asexual propagation methods
- Introduction to Soil Science: NZ soil properties, sustainable soil management
- Introduction to Plant Protection: weeds, pests, diseases, disorders, prevention and control methods
- Amenity Horticultural Practices: plant nomenclature, plant selection for landscaping, pruning and training amenity trees and shrubs
