Demonstrate a strong foundation in health and human body systems relevant to midwifery.

Provide comprehensive care throughout pregnancy, birth, and up to six weeks post-natally.
AUT’s Bachelor of Health Science (Midwifery) programme prepares students for a successful and rewarding career as a registered midwife in Aotearoa New Zealand. The degree covers both academic and practical training, including over 2,400 hours of clinical practice. The curriculum builds strong foundational knowledge in health science and enquiry, progressing to advanced midwifery practice, pharmacology, prescribing, and responding to complexities in childbirth. Graduates can work as hospital or community midwives after registering with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand.

It will take a total of 4 years

Meet requirements for safe practice under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act and Children’s Act, including cultural and legal standards.
Capability to meet Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (HPCA Act) and Children’s Act 2014 requirements (including police clearance)
Valid driver’s license
Satisfactory references
Normally 18 credits at NCEA Level 3 in Biology or Chemistry, and 16 credits in Art History, Classical Studies, Drama, English, Geography, Health Education, History, Media Studies, Social Studies, Te Reo Māori, or Te Reo Rangatira
English language requirements for non-native speakers: IELTS (Academic) 7.0 overall with 6.5+ in Reading/Writing, 7.0 in Listening/Speaking
