The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science at AUT prepares graduates to become medical laboratory scientists, offering comprehensive training in biological and chemical sciences, diagnostic methods, laboratory management, and clinical practice. The programme includes a strong foundation in life sciences, advanced laboratory techniques, specialised streams in areas such as haematology and pathology, and a year-long clinical placement in approved laboratories. Upon completion and meeting regulatory requirements, graduates are eligible for registration as medical laboratory scientists in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Course Content
- General scientific grounding (Year 1): Foundations of Life, Introductory Mathematics for Science, Microbial Life, Introductory Laboratory & Histological Techniques, Introductory Immunology, Principles of Chemistry, Science and Society, Human Body Systems for Health.
- Genetics, pathology, and laboratory management (Year 2): Cells, Genes and Molecules, Pathology I, Laboratory Information and Quality Management, Vision Mātauranga: Science Practice in Aotearoa, Diagnostic Genetics, Medical Microbiology I, Clinical and Chemical Pathology, Immunohaematology.
- Specialisation and capstone (Year 3): Advanced Immunology, Advanced Haematology, Advanced Chemical Pathology, Advanced Medical Microbiology, Advanced Transfusion Science, Advanced Histology and Cytology, Science Capstone Project A & B.
- Clinical placement (Year 4): Placements in medical testing laboratories, selection from Clinical Training specialisations such as Clinical Chemistry, Molecular Diagnostics, Haematology, Histology, Immunology, Medical Microbiology, Transfusion Science.
- Laboratory management, diagnostics, and regulatory aspects.
