About This Course

AUT's Doctor of Health Science (DHSc) is an advanced research degree designed for experienced health professionals aiming to undertake research closely aligned with their workplace or professional interests. Unique in New Zealand, this doctoral programme combines taught components supporting research proposal development with a major thesis, fostering practice-led research. Graduates contribute to their field, deepen subject knowledge, and enhance their career prospects. The flexible, practice-oriented structure supports close collaboration with AUT’s research supervisors and health sector stakeholders.

  • HEAL911 Practice and Philosophies (40 points)
  • HEAL912 Research Practice and Methodology (40 points)
  • HEALX99 Thesis in Health Science (240 points)
  • Research proposal development
  • Collaboration with health system managers, policy makers and practice experts

Entry Requirements

Master’s degree with honours OR Bachelor’s degree with honours (equivalent to 4 years of study) in a specialisation relevant to the proposed research

Degree should have a standard equivalent to first or second class (first division) honours, with substantial research preparation (e.g., research project and written report)

Minimum of five years’ professional experience in the specific area of study

Applicants must submit a CV, academic transcripts, evidence of research capability or publications, and a brief research project outline

Acceptance subject to supervisor/faculty availability and appropriate facilities
