Core skills this course teaches
Pass Police and Defence entry tests
Students will develop the fitness and academic skills (maths, English, abstract reasoning) to pass entry tests required for Police College or Defence services.
Apply organisational theory and history
Students will understand and explain the history, community role, and operational context of their chosen service (Police/Navy/Army/Air Force).
Develop personal and cultural identity in context
Students will identify their skills, interests, and cultural influences, and relate personal identity and whānau goals to career pathways.
About This Course
This certificate is designed for those interested in a career with the NZ Police, Army, Navy, Air Force, or related public safety services. It covers both academic and physical readiness for service entry tests, alongside theory and background on New Zealand’s policing and defence roles. You will study fitness, English, maths, reasoning, personal and cultural identity, and organisational history, as well as develop teamwork, report writing, presentation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills needed for service or further study.
Course Content
- Preparation for police and defence entry tests including fitness, maths, English, and abstract reasoning
- Theory and knowledge relevant to entry and operation in Police and Defence services
- History and role of Police and Defence services in the community and internationally
- Identifying interpersonal skills and personal profile
- Exploring cultural influences and identity to the whenua
- Matching skills and interests to Police, Army, Navy, Air Force pathways
- Time and resource management
- Setting and achieving physical training goals
- Work project planning, management and report writing
- Personal presentation and communication skills (interpersonal, verbal, non-verbal, and written)
- Problem-solving and study skills
- Understanding and managing stress and PTSD
- Optional First Aid Certification (additional cost)
Entry Requirements
Level 1 NCEA with 10 literacy credits and 10 numeracy credits
Special admission may be granted to domestic applicants aged 20+ with skills, education, or work experience indicating potential for success
Physical fitness, capable of all course practical components (fitness test may be required)
