Gain skills in analysing, contextualising and critiquing creative works and the creative process.
The Master of Creative Writing (MCW) at Massey University is a 180-credit, NZQF Level 9 qualification that enables graduates to produce their own original creative works alongside critical literary analysis. The qualification is open to graduates from any discipline (with suitable academic achievement) and can be completed in 1.5 years full-time or part-time. The programme involves coursework, workshops, creative projects, and a supervised thesis. Graduates will be prepared for careers in writing, publishing, media, arts, and education. The course is offered via distance/online learning, and is open internationally.
What you need to know first
Bachelor’s degree with at least a B grade average across the 200 and 300-level specialisation courses, or a bachelor’s with honours degree or a postgraduate diploma in Arts in Creative Writing, Expressive Arts or English, with at least a B grade average.

Writing CV (optional if no relevant experience).
Personal statement (one paragraph explaining motivation for study).
Confirmation of portfolio authorship.
Academic transcripts for studies undertaken outside Massey University.
