Use analysis, research, planning, drafting, editing, and rewriting processes to create original fiction and nonfiction for audiences in print, digital, radio, screen, or stage in the creative industries.

This programme develops your skills as a writer for the creative industries, covering genres such as short fiction, non-fiction, script writing, and poetry. You'll learn through exercises, workshops, course readings, industry-relevant feedback, and special projects. The course is run fully online, offering flexibility to fit around your lifestyle, and is supported by a team of accomplished writers. You'll engage with both traditional and digital platforms, preparing you to produce original written works for specific audiences, including print, digital, radio, screen, or stage. Graduates are equipped to work independently or in professional writing contexts.
What you need to know first
Be at least 16 years old at the time the programme commences.
Be able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level.

Employ tools and approaches that enhance work in various professions and writing-related fields.

Demonstrate awareness of and responsibility for professional, legal, and ethical aspects in writing practice.
Be physically able to complete the programme-specific outcomes.
Applicants for whom English is not a first language must have an IELTS score of 6.0 (with at least 5.5 in each band) or an accepted international equivalence.
Applicants under the age of 20: provide a sample of original creative writing and have a minimum of 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 including at least 14 credits in an English-rich subject, or successful completion of a recognised writing foundation programme or equivalent.
Applicants aged 20 years and over: provide evidence of ability to achieve qualification graduate outcomes.
Special entry may be possible at the discretion of the Head of Department.
