What You're Signing Up For

This beginner's-level programme builds on foundational Te Reo Māori, providing interactive learning in both language and cultural protocols (tikanga Māori). It introduces more advanced conversational skills, pronunciation, basic vocabulary and sentence structures, as well as waiata and customs. Graduates are prepared for everyday use of Māori language at home, work, and community, and for further study at higher NZQA levels.

Course Content

  • Mahi Ngahau: Tense markers, action, and statives in Māori
  • Haerenga: Language of travel and holidays
  • He Tikanga Marae: Marae protocol, roles, and conversational practice
  • Tangata Rongonui: Third person language, confidence in Te Reo
  • Pronunciation of sounds and words
  • Basic greetings and self-introduction
  • Vocabulary and sentence structure
  • Understanding and following tikanga (protocols)
  • Performing waiata
  • Using Māori confidently in everyday contexts

What you need to know first

Minimum age 16 (unless an exemption from attending school is granted)

Applicants should have little or no knowledge of Te Reo Māori

Must attend an information sharing hui with a Kaiako before enrolment
