What You're Signing Up For

The Certificate of University Preparation (CUP) at the University of Waikato is designed for students who do not meet university entrance requirements or who need additional academic skills before starting degree study. This full-time, six-month certificate helps students gain entry to bachelor's degrees and succeed in university by building confidence, critical thinking, research, and academic writing abilities. The programme includes two compulsory foundation papers and two electives, allowing students to build a strong foundation tailored to their future study interests. Courses are taught in Hamilton with flexible intakes and part-time options available by approval.

What you need to know first

NCEA Level 3: 30 credits in university-approved subjects with numeracy and literacy; OR

NCEA Level 2 Certificate and 12 credits each in three university-approved subjects with numeracy and literacy (not enrolled in high school in past 12 months); OR

Successful completion of a Level 3 or 4 tertiary certificate

Applicants not meeting these can be assessed case by case and should include a personal statement
