The Bachelor of Nursing Pacific (Level 7) at Manukau Institute of Technology prepares students to become registered nurses with special expertise in Pacific health. The programme uniquely integrates Pacific worldviews and Māori perspectives with mainstream nursing education, offering smaller class sizes, a family-like environment, and collaboration with Pacific leaders and organisations. Graduates are equipped with the practical skills, cultural competence, and hands-on experience required to work as registered nurses, ready to make a difference in their communities and across New Zealand’s diverse health sector.
Course Content
- Pacific worldviews in relation to individual, family and community health
- Scientific foundations for nursing practice (including pharmacology, sciences for nurses)
- Self-identity and cultural exploration in Pacific and Māori contexts
- Introduction to nursing practice underpinned by Pacific perspectives
- Nursing with in-patient, mental health, and community focus (integration of cultural, clinical, and theoretical components)
- Professional practice, including legal, ethical and research frameworks
- Hauora Māori – inclusiveness of Māori and Pacific worldviews in nursing
- Pacific health priorities in Aotearoa NZ
- Transition to professional registered nurse practice
