This 12-week full-time programme prepares students for a career as a Marine Engineer Class 6 (MEC 6) by equipping them with the practical skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain engine room and auxiliary equipment on commercial vessels. The course includes a blend of online and in-person study, simulator-based training, and first aid. Graduates generally work on commercial vessels such as trawlers, tug boats, ferries, or charter boats, and may progress to the Marine Engineer Class 6 certificate of competency from Maritime New Zealand.
What you need to know first
48 credits at NCEA Level 2 OR a relevant Level 3 or 4 maritime certificate or equivalent
Evidence of required English language proficiency for non-native speakers (IELTS 5.5 Academic or equivalent)
