Plan, monitor, and execute the passage of large vessels using a combination of coastal, electronic, and celestial navigation techniques.
This 2.5-year diploma prepares graduates for a seagoing career as a watchkeeper deck officer in charge of a navigational watch. You'll gain a deep understanding of advanced navigation techniques, ship operations, maritime safety, and leadership required to safely operate and manage deck duties on ships of any gross tonnage. The program involves both theoretical courses and required practical seatime and leads to a Maritime New Zealand certificate, recognised under the IMO STCW code.

Face-to-face learning in a physical classroom setting
New Zealand Maritime School, Auckland
It will take a total of 30 months

Oversee cargo operations and supervise non-technical vessel maintenance at the operational level.
Evidence of medical and eyesight standards by Maritime New Zealand
New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Crewing – Able Seafarer Deck strand (Level 4) OR evidence of sea service as per STCW code
14 credits in Mathematics (calculus, algebra or equivalent) and/or Physics (for those with no seagoing experience)
Sufficient competence in English (IELTS Academic 6.0 or higher or equivalent)
For international students: Meet NZQA and NZQF English language criteria
