Short course on the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), providing skills in the use of GMDSS radio equipment for seafarers to meet international safety standards.
In-person study
Face-to-face learning in a physical classroom setting
It will take a total of 2 weeks

Apply understanding of the statutory framework of the Maritime Mobile Service and Radio Regulations.

Operate GMDSS equipment for search and rescue purposes, including following procedures in the IAMSAR manuals.

Manage the prevention of false distress messages.
This course trains experienced seafarers in the use of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) as mandated by the International Maritime Organization. The focus is on the operation of radio equipment, statutory frameworks, and emergency communications for shipping safety. Participants learn to transmit and receive information using GMDSS subsystems, fulfil regulatory requirements, and are eligible to gain a Ministry of Commerce and Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) endorsed General Operators Certificate with GMDSS endorsement.
