The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Massey University is an advanced research qualification for those who wish to conduct original and significant research. The PhD is awarded for a thesis demonstrating the candidate's ability to perform independent and original research, making a notable contribution to knowledge and understanding in a field of study. Students benefit from research training, communications events, tailored writing and research management workshops, and are supported by a supervisory panel. The PhD includes a provisional registration period and culminates with a thesis submission and oral defence. Available at Auckland, Wellington, and Manawatū campuses.
Course Content
- Completion of an original research thesis
- Provisional year (with formal progress review after 9–12 months full-time or 12–16 months part-time)
- Research communications events (e.g., Three-Minute Thesis competition)
- Personal effectiveness and relationship-building support (Strengths@Massey)
- Intensive thesis writing boot camps
- Workshops: academic writing, databases, data management, project management, research funding, grant applications, intercultural communication, entrepreneurship, innovation
- Ongoing progress reporting
- Final thesis submission and oral defence
- Exhibition/installation/performance with exegesis for Creative Arts candidates as required
What you need to know first
Completion of a postgraduate honours or master's degree with First or Second Class Honours (Division I) B+ equivalent, or equivalent qualification
