The Bachelor of Applied Science (Laboratory Science) (Level 7) at UCOL is a three-year full-time degree designed to prepare graduates for technical roles in various laboratory environments across New Zealand. The programme provides in-depth knowledge in applied science disciplines such as chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, statistical analysis, and research methods. It incorporates work placements and real-world projects to ensure graduates have practical experience alongside theoretical learning. Flexible part-time options enable students to balance work and study. The curriculum promotes critical thinking, problem solving, and compliance with workplace safety and legislative requirements. Graduates are equipped to pursue careers as technicians in private and government laboratories, research institutes, and educational labs, and can advance to postgraduate study such as a Master of Science.

UCOL is a polytechnic built around the kind of learning that actually sticks — hands-on, practical, and grounded in the real world. With campuses across the lower North Island and a programme range that stretches from trades and health to creative arts and IT, it's a strong fit for learners who want a clear path into work without unnecessary detours. Whether you're fresh out of school, changing direction, or building on what you already know, UCOL is set up to meet you where you are.
