About This Course
The Music Diploma (Performance) leads to the New Zealand Diploma in Performing Arts (Level 5) and provides a robust foundation for a career as a performing musician. The programme features a combination of hands-on lessons, genre-based study, ensemble work, and real-world industry preparation. Students gain practical and theoretical expertise in music through intensive block courses, develop strong core musicianship, and build up their creative, analytical, and performance abilities. Graduates will be equipped with the skills to engage audiences, manage professional practice, and pursue further study or employment in the creative industries.

- Musician’s Toolkit: foundational skills for creative work in music
- Genre Exploration I-III: deep dives into three distinct musical genres
- Sustainable Musicianship: advanced genre study, research, and practice
- Advanced Genre Study I-III: immersion in three advanced musical genres with focus on production and performance
- Hands-on instrument lessons/band rehearsals
- Industry standard DAW techniques and sound design
- Chart writing and arranging
- Performance workshops
- Band room etiquette and PA setup
- Listening analysis
- Reflection, feedback and improvement cycles
- Professional practice in the music industry: gig acquisition, contracts, invoicing, tax
- Financial management for musicians
- Personal wellbeing strategies for musicians
- Research and analysis of musical, cultural, and professional contexts
- DAW performance techniques and keyboard lab
- Musical exploration: learning a second instrument
Entry Requirements
16 years of age or older
Domestic student
Certificate in Music (Creativity) Level 4 or NCEA Level 2 or equivalent
Interview/audition (musical proficiency required: pitch, time)
IELTS General or Academic 5.5 (no band below 5) or equivalent if English is not the first language
