Massey University’s Master of Applied Social Work is designed for those who want to become registered social workers but do not have a bachelor’s degree in social work. This two-year, 240-credit postgraduate qualification prepares students for professional practice through research-informed courses, practical engagement in field education, and academic study. Completion leads to eligibility for provisional registration as a social worker in New Zealand, with recognition in other English-speaking countries subject to their regulations. The degree features engaging, assignment-based assessment, field work placements, and learning in areas such as social work theory, sustainable development, mana tangata, research, and organisational practice.
What you need to know first
Undergraduate degree in social sciences (e.g., social and cultural studies, psychology, human development) or alternative degree with relevant experience in a social/community setting.
