The Bachelor of Applied Social Work at NorthTec | Te Pūkenga is designed to prepare graduates for professional social work practice in Aotearoa New Zealand, with a strong emphasis on critical reflection, cultural safety, and self-care. The programme includes theory components, extensive fieldwork across multiple agencies, and assessment through diverse academic and practice-based assignments. Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Social Worker Registration Board. The degree programme addresses the specific needs of Northland (Tai Tokerau) and broader national and global requirements, ensuring students are equipped to respond to change and work in bicultural and intercultural contexts. There is a strong commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and contemporary issues in social work.

What you need to know first

Blended study
This is a mix of online learning & face-to-face sessions
Available in 2 locations
It will take a total of 3 years

Work effectively with individuals, families, whānau, communities and groups from diverse ethnic, cultural, and indigenous backgrounds.
Be at least 16 years old at programme commencement
Able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level
Physically able to complete the programme-specific outcomes
Completed NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance including 14 credits in an English language rich subject
Alternative criteria: Minimum of 'B' passes in a relevant Level 3 Foundation Programme, or evidence of recent successful tertiary study, or evidence of relevant work/life experience (usually equivalent to two years full time)
Interview with, and approval from, Pathway Manager for alternative entry
IELTS 6.5 in all bands (if English/Māori is not first language or secondary schooling was not in English); or accepted international equivalence
Full and unrestricted NZ driver licence (Disability exemption available)
Completed application form and additional admission criteria (referee reports, police check, confidential disclosure of past/pending convictions, Oranga Tamariki involvement, social service agency status, history of substance abuse)
Pass police vetting
Completed Social Services Additional Information form and referee checks (professional/educational and Children’s Act 2014)
