The Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Theory (PGDipCounsTh) at the University of Auckland is designed for people who hold a bachelors degree in education, counselling, nursing, or social work and have at least three years’ practical experience. The one-year full-time or flexible part-time programme deepens knowledge of counselling theory and research, as well as developing professional counselling skills for work with diverse clients. This is a pathway to the Master of Counselling, with those achieving a GPA of 5 or higher and completing a research methods course eligible for direct entry into the second year of the MCouns.

Face-to-face learning in a physical classroom setting

Develop and apply effective counselling skills in supervised environments, preparing for practice in a wide range of community, educational, and health settings.

Undertake a minimum of 100 hours of supervised professional counselling practice with accompanying professional supervision.
At least three years’ practical experience in a relevant field
Interview (with referees’ statements and evidence of practical experience)
