About This Course

The Master of Arts (MA) at the University of Auckland is a highly flexible postgraduate programme with both research and taught options. Students can select from more than 40 disciplines, entering with either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. The degree is designed to expand subject knowledge, research skills and transferable capabilities such as critical and strategic thinking. Graduates go on to varied careers in areas including government, international development, museums, research and policy, or progress to doctoral studies.

  • Advanced taught courses in chosen arts or humanities subjects
  • Dissertation or substantive research project
  • Critical and strategic thinking development
  • Opportunities for cross-disciplinary study (may include up to 30 points from other subjects)
  • Small classes and academic mentorship
  • Research thesis or portfolio (for research pathway)
  • Transferable skills including communication and cultural awareness

Entry Requirements

For 180-point taught pathway: undergraduate degree

For 120-point research or taught pathway: postgraduate degree
