The programme combines academic study with 25 weeks of teaching placements, offering specialisations in Early Childhood or Primary Teaching, and includes opportunities to specialise in Pacific education. Courses focus on child development, curriculum, teaching practice, learning communities, and Te Reo Māori, with options for part-time or full-time study. Graduates meet the requirements for teacher registration in Aotearoa and are equipped to inspire the next generation.

  • Teaching placements (25 weeks across degree)
  • People, Whānau and Communities of Aotearoa
  • Development of the Child in Aotearoa
  • Past and Present Perspectives of Aotearoa
  • Te Reo Māori and Tikanga I, II, III (includes marae experience at Ngā Wai o Horotiu, City Campus)
  • Specialty: Early Childhood Teaching courses (e.g. ECE Practicum, Te Whāriki, Mana Atua, Mana Whenua)
  • Specialty: Primary Teaching courses (e.g. Primary Practicum, Integrating Curriculum: English, Mathematics, The Arts, Physical Education, Health, Wellbeing)
  • Pacific specialisation: Pacific Gagana and Aganu'u, Pacific Talanoa

What you need to know first

New Zealand University Entrance (Discretionary Entrance not accepted)

Teaching Council requirements: literacy and numeracy assessments, satisfactory interview, good character and fitness, initial teacher education programme entry form, Police Vetting (NZ and overseas if applicable), satisfactory references, meet Teaching Council of Aotearoa English language competency requirements, meet safety check requirements (Children’s Act 2014).
